It has been a hot day up here in Maine today … and I guess around the world … here are some of the articles I found of interest today. I hope you find them thought provoking and of some interest.

Well, it seems the Donald always is in the news. He is beginning to sound more like a serious candidate. This site, obviously, is enamored of him, but it is interesting to see some of the things he is promising to do. Unfortunately, I find very  few on this list that can be accomplished by presidential fiat. It is going to take the cooperation of Congress, the Courts and the executive branch bureaucracy - none of which is a given, and I suspect probably each, in one way or another, will offer active resistance to the Trump Program. Last ditch, desperate resistance from the Democrats (who will tie things in knots in the Senate) is a foregone conclusion.

This is the official site explaining Trump's position

The concept of this story is interesting: A political ideology can only be tied to one candidate ... and if that candidate fails, then the movement is dead. I think Mark Twain's quote is appropriate here.

More rhetoric from the Ayatollah in Iran ... take it as you will.

Now, for those democrats who believe in majority rule, it is interesting in this Washington Post article that it fails to point out that since the majority party in both houses of Congress happen to be Republican, it would seem that they should be able to pass a host of legislation. However, the Democrats - ever the loyal opposition - will do everything in their power to derail passage of any legislation in the certainty that the villains of any problems will be portrayed as the evil Republicans ... even though when this happened with Democratic majorities, it was the Republicans who were the villains ... or at least so it seemed in the Washington Post ... as in this article.

Something to think about when toying with raising the minimum wage ... and the fast food and restaurant industries are not the only industries that will face similar answers to higher labor costs. Higher costs will spur all sorts of innovations.

This is a break from the grim daily news. I love this.

Interesting graphics in this story about funding Planned Parenthood

Interesting commentary ... but I really think it all just is another manifestation of the Cycle of Democracy ... and how the country de Tocqueville so admired has collapsed ... and will die because the people no longer see anything by entitlements.

And this is where we are going, First Amendment be damned.

It seems a bit self-aggrandizing and narcissistic to plan a billion-dollar presidential library. Even George W's cost half that much.

A few somewhat surprising facts about the US Army (and its reserve components)

This is a wonderful concept ... and I hope it can be scaled up for mass distribution. In reality, every household everywhere in the world could use one ... even in the USA as a disaster preparedness measure.

Would that the sun and nature always followed the statistical predictions of research scientists ... but, unfortunately, the sun and nature travel to the beat of their own drums ... and this could happen tomorrow, for all we really know.

Given the key role Bob Woodward played back in the 1970s, it behooves us to listen to what he is saying now.

Mr. Greenberg, once again, offers a cogent analysis of our current political situation ... unfortunately ... he probably is spot on right.

As I have said many times before: The same-sex debate never was about love. It was about getting government benefits and forcing social acceptance. Religious freedom and conscience be damned.

If this report is true ... it is sad and unfortunate, both for the apparent impact on the standards of the school and the command influence being wielded by the commander in chief in order to fulfill a political agenda. The Army will suffer because of this.

One hopes this is a weapons system that works out for the Navy, as the LCS-class seriously needs the combat power.

It seems the F-22 Raptor is coming into its own as the Air Force figures out ways to use its unique capabilities.

Assuming the intel analysts are correct, this is troubling news ... but most troubling to me is that the shortness of the Chinese development time. In the US we have become fat and lazy and take way too long to field new ships, weapons and aircraft.

Realists? In the Obama Administration? From progressives and Liberals? From the Democrats? Heck, from anybody in Washington these days, left or right? Give me a break ... it ain't happening and it won't and when the time comes a lot of young men and women in American uniforms (if not a bunch of people not) will pay the price in blood.

This is the Air Force alternate solution to the A-10 problem ... I got a better solution, give the A-10s to the Army. I know it violates that 1940s agreement that set up the separate Air Force, but I think we should take a lesson from the Marines and see that dedicated air support flown by Army pilots would free up the Air Force to do the missions it really likes to do.

This story goes to show  you how history often hangs on the slenderest of threads.

This article is so tellingly true about American political leadership it isn't even funny ... particularly with the current administration

Interesting analysis of the current tracking polls in the GOP race.

The sad thing about this story, which probably is accurate, is people who really believe in democracy should be dismayed. If President Obama does as expected, it will only serve more to discredit the institutions of governance in Washington and that is why people like Donald Trump are getting such support.

Having served in Army public affairs I recognize carefully crafted terminology used by the Central Command spokesman.  It is a denial but not a denial. "We" don't have any direct evidence ... which means that we probably don't have anybody on the ground there, so how could we have direct evidence. Of course, if there was evidence - and the Germans apparently believe there is - then another of President Obama's "red lines" has been crossed, and CENTCOM is a good soldier enough to know the president doesn't want to fight this fight.

One wonders, sometimes, what pies Google doesn't have it fingers ... or maybe tentacles ... in.
