Suggested readings for Aug 7, 2015

Note: Each block of text actually is a link to a story or a web page that I am commenting on. Click on that text and it will take you to the page being referred to.

Well, this promised to be a rather eclectic list tonight, because I am running late and am of little incentive to provide it with much organization. Basically, I will just be posting them as I read them.

A friend of mine in South Carolina gave me the heads up on this story of a young teen being killed by a police officer. His question was where is all the rage over this case and no hullabaloo? Let's see. Teen-aged male? Check. Unarmed? Apparently. On a date with his girlfriend. Check. Approached by a police officer with no probable cause? Apparently. Now, not to prejudge the officer, because his side really hasn't been explained, but what is the difference? Oh, yeah ... the young man was white. This really is a sad commentary on the media today.

In a way, this is an awesome story ... and just goes to show: Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. It also illustrates how special the men (and maybe women) who wear the Ranger tab are.

The people at Stratfor seem to think the Turks will bring ground troops to bear against ISIS in Syria ... the question remains, what roles will its NATO partners, like the US, play.

This seems a rather damning analysis of the European Union and its failings, in the forefront being exactly what role should Germany play

Interesting testament to the Australians and to the Brotherhood of Warriors bonded in the hellfire that was Gallipoli in 1915.

An overview how the Marines operate ... interesting reading ... now imagine doing that with hot landing zones and under fire at an Embassy and between both.

Interesting how Congress - on both sides of the aisle - sidesteps the issue whether the US is at war with ISIS or not.  It seems the 2002 resolution on Iraq is giving Democrats cover not to vote on any military action, and the Republicans just don't seem to understand that they don't have to pass an Obama authored bill but one authored in Congress. So the new war in Iraq drags on ... unauthorized

There have been rumblings about this crash with Seal Team 6 for awhile ... and it makes one wonder why the reports are not being released.

This is an interesting story, and makes one wonder about the dynamics of it. Note that most of the top officers at each service branch just got replaced ... by people nominated by the White House ... and they are already off the reservation on who or what is a threat to the US. To me, it is another example of bad staff work at the White House, as well as a new willingness for the top military leaders to buck their political masters ... while the military leaders probably are correct in their assessments (and the White House staff wrong, what's new with that), what is new is to make those differences public ... that is different

A criticism of the President's speech defending the Iran Deal and putting forth what are things the president said that were not really true.

Obama's speech takes another hit ... I sometimes wonder what universe our President inhabits, but it sure doesn't seem to be the same one I live in.

Another story about handling illegal immigrants that just leaves me shaking my head in bewilderment

More criticism of President Obama's defense of the Iran Deal ... which leads me to remember that when one side starts slipping into demagoguery and demonizing his opponents, then one should take another look at what he is trying to defend and reexamine the justifications and assumptions that are in favor of the deal. There is a lawyer saying: If you have the facts, argue the facts. If you got the law, argue the law. But if you have neither, baffle them with bullshit. My Bovine Scatology meter is sounding like crazy.

The last sentence of this HuffPo article promoting secular humanism and atheism is so telling ... and it is why some people can't grasp the concept of a deity. But then, faith is believing when everyone around you is telling you not to believe. Too many people, in my estimation, are looking for an activist deity ... one who comes down and takes them by the hand and talks directly to them. When that doesn't happen, or they can't see it happening, then they say, there is no God. It is the problem of our instant gratification society.

What to do with the Mistrals? Well, I think the French would be keen on leasing them or giving them to a EU Navy ...

This is an interesting take on how to solve the VA's problems

I have to say, I was impressed by Carly Fiorina. I watched the debate, but not the spin scrum afterwards ... but I heard she did well there. She definitely someone to watch, research and listen to ...

Interesting review of the debates ... from a liberal slant

And that folks is it for tonight …. I have more to post, but I am tired and am going to take a break … I will posted a Take 2 sometime on Saturday.
